The Benz Swiss factory, being designed for research and specialized hand-building, can only produce a finite quantity of phono cartridges. To satisfy the growing market of music lovers searching for quality and affordable moving coil cartridges, Benz went to Japan and established a relationship with an automated factory to produce a series of cartridges reflecting the Benz philosophy. These cartridges had to possess flat frequency response to accurately reproduce the natural tonality of recordings, not the accentuated high frequencies of lesser designs. They had to have exceptional trackability and exemplary channel separation, resolving musical subtlety and three-dimensional imaging. They also had to be compatible with a wide range of tonearms, and be offered in a variety of output levels to match every preamp. The MC Silver, MC Gold and MC20E2 are the results of these efforts.

Benz Ace SL Phono Cartridge

The S-Class models of the Wood Body SL (low-output), SM (medium) and SH (high), the Glider SL, SM, SH, and the ACE SL, SM, SH all incorporate the Benz Dynascan system with a Gyger S stylus coupled to improved generators using new coil windings and refined pole pieces/damper designs. Albert Lukaschek began researching increased performance and uniformity of his cross-coil designs while developing the Benz Ebony H, L and TR models. Experimenting with the length of the solid Boron cantilever revealed how the elasticity of this very stiff material affected compliance and trackability. Development of a grooved rear pole piece for countersinking the o-ring damper, first introduced on the Benz Ruby square plate cartridges, was then adapted to the cross-coil designs, given their lower contact area and damping characteristics. The lower mass coils and matched cantilevers of the new S-Class retain their real world output levels and with their improved styli, offer heightened performance. These cartridges yield one of the best performance/value ratios in cartridge market, regardless of output level.

Benz SHR Gullwing Phono Cartridge

The Gullwing is a hybrid of the LP S class, Ruby and Glider cartridges. Like the LP S class, it uses a brass frame and is Rhodium plated for superior electrical characteristics and to visually distinguish it from the Glider (gold plated aluminum). The generator is based on the Ruby square plate and available in both .35mV and .7mV. The SLR low output is best used with phono stages offering greater than 60dB gain, loaded at 400 ohms or higher. The SHR at .7mV is ideal for tube phono stages in the 50-60dB gain range, less efficient systems, and prefers a 47kohm load.
