From entry level upwards, every hi-fi system responds to the introduction of shielded speaker cable.  More detail, improved dynamics, better timing, tonal neutrality across the frequency range and most importantly of all, a hugely enjoyable and involving musical experience.

Carnival SilverScreen can improve the musical abilities of almost any system it is fitted to, and this applies just as much to home cinema systems as it does to hi-fi systems.  The sheer number of components and the amount of cabling involved in a typical multi-channel home cinema and music system makes a compelling case for the use of a shielded speaker cable.  Wiring the front three speakers with Carnival SilverScreen and the rear speakers with either Carnival Classic or Leyline works really well, the effect of the shielding making big improvements to detail and definition. Vocals, either spoken or sung, are clearer and easier to follow.  Sound tracks are more involving and immersive and if it’s music you are after, bass lines are easier to follow and dynamics easier to hear.

Sarsen has a white PVC outer jacket, FEP insulated oxygen free copper conductors arranged in twisted pair configuration, it’s easy to work with, very flexible and has an overall diameter of 3.2mm!  It’s discrete to the point of invisibility.  It can often be tucked between the carpet and the skirting board.

Despite the size, Sarsen is a proper speaker cable. It carries a musical signal with a real sense of life and dynamics – and it’s small enough for speaker-cable-hating partners to find entirely acceptable.

Chord Rumour was our second attempt at producing a speaker cable. The first being a copper and polyethylene flat design in single and bi-wire configuration called Myth/Legend. We were also investigating speaker cables that used silver-plated conductors in combination with PTFE insulation. We had been experimenting with twisted pair conductor configurations, as at the time, heavy gauge parallel conductors were the standard for speaker cables.  By twisting the conductors together, we could hear the noise floor of the system improve. We reached an ideal twist ratio and designed the cable around this.

When we launched Chord Rumour in 1996,  it was one of the smallest speaker cables available (16 AWG). Retailers would take it into their demo rooms looking dubious and come out looking surprised and delighted.  It sounded a lot bigger than it looked, it carried detail and dynamics really well and it was more coherent than just about any other cable around.  As people got over the size and listened, rather than looked, it became a very popular cable. Apart from cosmetic changes it remained unchanged for many years.

The Chord Odyssey is a very similar design to Chord Rumour but features larger conductors. This brings real improvements to the dynamics of sound and music, particularly in the bass. Cymbals are shimmeringly realistic, acoustic guitars and pianos have natural weight and realism.

The Chord Odyssey speaker cable is almost identical to Rumour. It features 19 strands of silver plated oxygen free copper per conductor surrounded by Teflon insulation and twisted together; the major difference being the overall gauge of the conductors. Whereas Rumour uses 16 gauge conductors, Chord Odyssey has altogether more substantial 12 gauge conductors and will carry significantly higher currents. Chord Odyssey is available in a two (Odyssey 2) and four core (Odyssey 4) version.

Like Rumour, The Chord Odyssey is extremely compatible and is used across a wide range of systems. Because of its compact construction, Odyssey is a great favourite with people installing high-end audio and home cinema systems. As a point of interest, for reasons of cost, people who need extremely long runs of speaker cable tend to fit cheaper cables because of the cost involved. Better quality cables can really come into their own when the lengths required are longer than average.

The Chord Odyssey brings real improvements to the dynamics of the sound, particularly in the bass, both in terms of weight and attack. This is also true of the mid and treble as well. Cymbals are noticeably more realistic and have greater weight and authority. The same is true of acoustic guitars and also pianos. The lower resistance of the Chord Odyssey also makes it a particularly good choice for longer runs.

Epic uses the same conductors as Chord Odyssey, and the shielding, visible through its translucent jacket is taken from our Signature speaker cable. The shielding brings big improvements right across the frequency range. There is space around individual instruments and the timbre of instruments is easy to hear. Violins, cellos and violas sound more realistic, likewise pianos, bass notes have great definition and rhythms are easy to follow and get involved with.

12 AWG silver plated conductors taken from Chord Odyssey.  Conductors are spaced with a PVC jacket for mechanical damping before the foil and braid shielding is applied.  Outer jacket is translucent PVC to provide further mechanical damping.  The heavier conductors of Odyssey made it ideal for floor standing loudspeakers where it will help to bring control and definition, particularly across the lower frequencies.
